While Princesses Sleep by Emma Right is a beautifully illustrated mystery about princesses getting into mischief. This mystery for young children takes place in the 19th century. Young Princess Elle and her sister, Princess Belle, are hearing strange noises at night when they should be sleeping. When they try to investigate they only find some odd answers and get into trouble.
While Princesses Sleep is a beautifully illustrated book. Right uses actual paintings by artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir to help in picturing the happenings in the story. The story itself was also quite entertaining. I grew up reading tales about princesses. Too often the tales are retold. This story is something new to me. I liked that Right wrote about the things princesses really did in the 19th century, such as painting and learning to play musical instruments. The princesses having a mystery to solve made the story exciting.
My only disappointment is that I have to wait for the next book in the series to find out what is really going on in the castle. However, I do have my hunches about what is happening. I also wish that the names of the paintings were included. I really enjoyed reading the little bio about Pierre-Auguste Renoir that Right included in the back of the book. Not only is this a good book, but it is also educational. While Princesses Sleep is the first book in The Princesses of Chadwick Castle Adventure Series. I can see being a great series for young girls. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next book.
