Where Do Unicorns Go on Vacation? is a charming children's book by Kim Ann. It doesn’t seem to fit in the era it was printed. It doesn’t pretend to have a deep meaning. It’s not concerned with who your parents are. It’s not worried about bullies. It doesn’t fear exclusion. It doesn’t care what your politics are. It doesn’t want to know your sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or favorite football team. It simply wants to know where unicorns spend their vacation time, and more importantly, wants young readers to enjoy the story on the way to the answer.
How can I sum up something that’s so beautifully simple? The narrator and the unicorns are very similar: they’re amazingly detached from the world. They enjoy every second of their cooperative existence. In a world where so much children’s entertainment is designed to indoctrinate their viewers with all sorts of garbage, Kim Ann delivers a story that’s happy just being what it is: a children’s story. The text is well written; rhythmic and vibrant as a children’s book should be. The art is of the highest quality without being even the slightest bit suggestive or affected. The colors scream unicorn. As a father of a daughter, the world of children’s entertainment has much importance to me. I would buy this book for us to read together if she were still of the age to enjoy such books. To those who want an actual children’s story, I recommend Where Do Unicorns Go on Vacation?
