When We Met Neanderthals is written by Neil Bockoven and illustrated by Vladimir Kirichenko. This book shares the history of the species of humankind during the Stone Age and Ice Age periods. Have you ever wondered how many species of humans there are or were? How different tribes hunted food, cured ailments or survived in such treacherous terrain and weather conditions? When We Met Neanderthals will answer several questions about how Neanderthals lived and thrived and the factors that led to their demise. Is it possible that Homo sapiens or Neanderthal DNA survives in modern human beings? What kind of weapons did Neanderthals and Homo sapiens have? What did they eat, drink or wear? Did they wage wars? What kind of animals lived during those times that may have been hunted by the different species of humans?

When We Met Neanderthals by Neil Bockoven may very well be the most informative walk through the history of humankind that I have ever read. Bockoven describes the differences in appearance between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens as well as their hunting and survival skills. This book could easily find a home amongst some of the best history books. The level of research and explanation that went into When We Met Neanderthals is evident in the descriptions of the medicines, diseases, and clothing that set each tribe apart from the other. The images are just as informative as the fact checkboxes and the story that goes along with the information. I recommend When We Met Neanderthals to any reader of any age. Kids in school and adults that enjoy learning something new could definitely benefit from reading this book!
