Lucinda E. Clarke offers a powerful psychological tale about one woman’s ordeal when dealing with fame in When Polly Won the Lottery: How would she spend £150 million? At the age of thirty, Polly London hits it big when she wins a staggering £150 million in the lottery. Like many lottery winners, this became life-changing for her as an orphan. It is finally her turn to call the shots and do what she wants to do for the first time in her life. The story evolves into a character study of two people in one: Pollyann maintains a low profile and employs the strategy of stealth wealth, choosing to make a difference by reaching out to the less privileged. Polly, on the other hand, has no inhibitions when it comes to the ostentatious display of wealth.
Winning the lottery can be either a gift or a curse, depending on how you handle sudden wealth and if you have the necessary financial literacy to pull it off. This is the strong message the story delivers, and Lucinda E. Clarke writes it with such passion as if she herself had won the lottery. When Polly Won the Lottery struck me deeply, as I have been playing the lottery from time to time, hoping for a big win. Dreaming is free, so why not? As personal wealth is a necessary component of living a comfortable life, this novel reminds us of the necessity to recognize the relationship between satisfaction and duration. It’s a great psychological and moral tale, and one that has a unique twist and satisfying story arc. Highly recommended.
