When I Am Angry by Michael Gordon is an insightful yet fun book about how young children can manage negative feelings, specifically anger, that might come upon them throughout different situations. The story follows Josh as he encounters anger during the day, whether it be because he can’t eat cake before lunch, get a new toy, or play with other kids without his parents being around. Although it is easy for him to lose control of his emotions, Josh slowly learns how to manage his anger, even when it’s hard, and his parents are proud of how he gets himself to calm down.
This book would make a great tool for children who struggle with anger and handling the emotions that often fight within them. Of course, all children will feel upset or angry at some point or another, but they have to learn how to work through those emotions. Josh is a relatable character for many children as he deals with everyday problems for a child. He doesn’t always get what he wants, and even though this upsets him, he works through his anger in a way that is understandable to other children who might read this book. The illustrations on each page by Max Larin are vibrant and entertaining to look at, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Josh’s various expressions throughout this short book. I would highly recommend When I Am Angry by Michael Gordon; it was a quick read with some easy-to-adapt anger management techniques for young ones!
