When Elves Die by Richard Poche is a dark fairy tale fantasy which revolves around Princess Carella. The princess goes missing, along with her group, when they are en route to recruit other tribes to join against the atrocities of Ravalynn, the Dark Queen. Kelroac, a barbarian, is hired by the Village Cleric to trace the missing group. But the Dark Queen also has her own barbarian, who is supposed to be a good fighter. The story is about the fight between light and dark. Will the Dark Queen be able to capture the village of Princess Carella? The elves and the Killtooths make it very exciting and imaginative for readers as they progress through the story.
With its thrills, scares, adventures, fantasy, darkness and action, this story will fascinate and captivate kids and keep them glued to the pages. Princess Carella, who is also a healer, is the positive character in the tale and the author does a great job portraying her and the Dark Queen effectively so that they remain in readers' minds. The author's narration is detailed and the images conveyed are vivid. The contrasting images of light and dark woven through the book are quite metaphorical. It is the type of story that will excite readers with its thrills and intrigues, but at the same time the fantasy element gives it a whimsy kind of feel. It's a book that kids will definitely enjoy reading.
