I am a computer programmer by profession, but I am just a "country girl" at heart. I love hearing/reading about the simpler life before the fast-paced technology "invaded" our world. The stories my grandmother used to share with me about her life finally inspired me to write fictional accounts about that time period. :)

When Dovie Sings by J. L. Stone is an emotional novel about a sweet girl named Dovie and her family. Her father works in the mines so that they can have something to put on the table. Besides Dovie, there are two younger siblings, Charlie and Esther. They are all loving and caring kids with angelic voices. Even after they lost their mother, each one of them hasn’t sunk into sadness but continued living and finding happiness and support in each other and their community. Their adventure in life has just begun, especially Dovie’s. New friends like Thomas are made at school and church, and new relationships are developing.
One of the aspects that I liked about When Dovie Sings by J. L. Stone is the quality of the writing and the effort put into the descriptions of various things, like the scene where Mrs. Anderson brings some clothes for Dovie and her sister. Each dress in this scene is described so beautifully that I could easily create a mental picture of it. Another aspect that I like about this book is the overall positive and full of love, acceptance, and faith messages and thoughts that are found throughout the book. The way the Watson family managed the loss of a loved one and found strength and love in each other to continue their daily life, full of new surprises, and how they accepted new people into their lives with open hearts and understanding is one of the best examples.
