When Dinosaurs Go to Bed, written by Josh Bluman and illustrated by Tetiana Kopytova, is a short bedtime story for children that details the bedtime habits of dinosaurs. The book begins with a young child asleep in his bed, surrounded by a room full of stuffed toy dinosaurs, telling the reader that, just like us, dinosaurs also have to get ready for bed. From there, each page features a beautifully illustrated and realistic looking dinosaur as it prepares to go to sleep. Although the bedtime rituals of the dinosaurs are fictional (ie: a Velociraptor sleeps best after eating peanut butter and crackers), the names and depictions of the dinosaurs themselves are accurate.
I had a lot of fun reading Josh Bluman's When Dinosaurs Go to Bed. It's clever and creative, and my daughter and I shared a few giggles as we read it together. Did you know a Diplodocus wears socks that get really stinky? Neither did we! Most of the things the dinosaurs do to prepare for bed are laugh-out-loud funny. The real star of this book, however, is its illustrations. Tetiana Kopytova is a master at combining color, realism, and a bit of fantasy. The images are of such a high quality that they could, without question, rival some of the best animation art that has been produced. At the end of the book, all of the dinosaurs are brought together with their species name under the illustration from their page in the book. Overall, this is a delightful read that will enchant any child out there who loves silly stories.
