When Darkness Falls: The Trilogy by Allie McCormack is a gorgeous offering for fans of paranormal romance. The narrative follows a deadly game between humans, vampires, and demons. The desert city of Al Khair has been ruled by a prudent Sultana, but the humans feel continually threatened by the vampires and demons led by an ancient vampire who lays claim to the land. It is against this backdrop that Alyssa, an orphan, joins a caravan in the hope of starting a new life for herself. But everything changes when she catches the attention of the Dark Lord himself. The vampire, Lord Damian, knows that there is something going on amongst the humans, but he is unable to take his mind off the young woman at the tower: the one with magic that sees through his disguising spell. His lust for Alyssa is such that he can’t control himself, and he risks bringing humans and vampires into an all-out war. What follows is a page-turning adventure filled with unpredictability and twists that are delightful.
This review covers the three books in the When Darkness Falls trilogy. Things that will immediately capture the attention of the reader include the exquisite writing and the cunning plot. Allie McCormack’s prose flows gracefully and I enjoyed that she is consistent in style and voice. The setting is a well-imagined sixteenth-century desert world that offers visually enticing imagery. The different races that occupy this world are well-written and readers will immediately get the feeling that this world exists under thinly-veiled tension. The conflict grows stronger as the reader moves through the books; each chapter is emotionally fueled and written to deepen the story steadily. Every fan who enjoys elaborately developed characters, strong romance, and robust conflict in a tale will find When Darkness Falls: The Trilogy irresistible. A story of forbidden love with characters who are real, written with emotional depth, and evolving through the plot in a way that feels natural. The writing is vigorous and the characters appealing. Overall, this trilogy offers the perfect escape for fans of the paranormal romance genre.
