What Your Soul Already Knows by Dr Salma Farook takes us on a journey to finding, or rather rediscovering, our true selves. Twenty-six short chapters cover aspects of life and living - attitude, diligence, gratitude, insight, our relationships, talents, self-belief, physical health, meditation and goals are just some of the topics examined. The purpose of the book is to remind us to listen to our inner child or true self and to use the natural knowledge and strengths we find there when we do that. Our struggles, self-doubts and unhappiness are caused by our turning away from our inner natural senses and when we return to paying attention to these our lives, purposes and relationships can become balanced and fulfilling.
Dr Salma Farook writes in a very accessible style. The short chapters make this an ideal book to dip into again and again, depending on which part you would like to reread. I loved this comforting and inspiring book. Although aimed at readers of any age, I think it would particularly suit young adults or those struggling with finding direction in life. I liked the philosophical quotes by different famous and well-known individuals at the start of each chapter. These, along with the headings, set the aim for each section. I felt the book was an empathetic journey for the soul seeking comfort and purpose in an often confusing, stressful and demanding world. The author suggests ways that we can begin to overcome issues such as difficulties in connecting with others, finding and using our natural talents, and using what is our real power i.e. control over our own reactions.
My favorite chapters include Kindness and how, when we give to others, we truly receive, and Temerity – taking the risk to follow our hearts and learning that “self-growth begins outside our comfort zone.” I liked the emphasis on confidence and how to move towards our goals with self-belief and courage. Full of sensible, insightful wisdom, What Our Soul Already Knows is an empathetic, gentle yet powerful book that will speak to readers wanting more balance, affirmation and joy in their lives. It is a convincing reminder to listen to our own inner voice and wisdom and to begin to live with authenticity and compassion for ourselves and others. Recommended as a loving gift to yourself or someone else.
