It promotes financial education and financial responsibility and teaches the use of a credit card through colorful illustrations and a relatable narrative. Young Ava becomes curious after watching her father use a credit card at the grocery store. In a bid to understand more, Ava asks her father what a credit card is and how it functions. He explains the concept in an easy-to-understand way, covering essential topics like borrowing money, repaying it to the bank, and the importance of using credit responsibly. The story also touches on broader concepts such as interest and the convenience of credit cards compared to cash, making it a helpful tool for parents to start conversations about financial responsibility with their children.
This book is a wonderful and effective way to introduce children to financial literacy. Kelly Lee has done an amazing job. I love how the story utilizes a simple plot that is easy for young readers to follow. Ava's curiosity about her father's credit card sparks a series of questions that naturally guide the narrative and the introduction of key concepts. Her father's patient explanations felt realistic and relatable. The characters are simply but thoughtfully depicted—Ava’s genuine curiosity and her father’s warm guidance create a relatable family dynamic. The pace is spot-on, with each new concept introduced at a suitable interval, allowing children to grasp each piece of information before moving on to the next. The themes of responsibility, borrowing, and trustworthiness are conveyed through simple scenarios, such as borrowing toys and repaying money. I observed a balance between education and entertainment. What is a Credit Card? is a delightful book for sparking early conversations about money and smart spending habits. Even an adult like me was educated.
