“How can you have a gold rush without a Mark Twain or Bret Harte or Jack London?” What Became of the Crow? is Robert Moriarty’s engaging inside story of a modern-day gold rush. This saga is worth telling and reading and could well become the script of a successful movie series. He recounts the journey over several decades of Novo Resources with his best friend Dr. Quinton Hennigh, Founder and President. His observations and commentary on Quinton’s understanding of the formation of gold deposits, his astute business mind, and his tenacity add another valuable dimension to this most readable book. “People afraid of making mistakes will never succeed at anything. Everything is a process of trial and error." Quinton was unafraid of the process.
Moriarty exposes the intrigue and skulduggery of mining politics, naming and shaming the characters. His skill at including important facts plus human interest incidences, colored by his sharp wit, makes this an appealing read for anyone, not only geology enthusiasts! His word pictures had me laughing out loud. “The constant barrage from flies is enough to make you consider suicide just to rid yourself of them.” Full-color unstaged photos of people and places, and gold itself made me feel as if I was reading Bob’s journal. Born and raised in Johannesburg, aka the City of Gold which grew out of mining the famous Witwatersrand gold reef, I was interested in learning more about gold mining. I certainly did while reading Robert Moriarty’s What Became of the Crow? This book is a great read for sheer entertainment and for valuable insight into mining generally and gold specifically. If you are considering buying gold shares, reading this book will give you a broader understanding of the business environment.
