In Welcome To Ollie's Undersea World Book II by Renate Schalk Schreiner, Ollie the octopus's school holidays have begun and he decides this is the perfect day to explore his surroundings. Ollie's ocean adventure takes him through the shallow waters, coral, and eelgrass where he meets many new friends. Ollie has some fun with seahorses and takes a ride on a turtle. Ollie returns to school with lots of stories to tell his friends. Next, Ollie and his friends take an exciting field trip to the dark and mysterious Abyss, where they discover a shipwreck. They learn about humans who live above the seabed and Ollie is given a very special gift. Ollie has learned that trying new things is great fun and cannot wait for his next adventure.
Welcome To Ollie's Undersea World Book II by Renate Schalk Schreiner is such a charming tale following Ollie on his adventures. The characters were really cute and their personalities came through not only the adorable illustrations but also in their dialogue. I loved the rhyming style of the narrative, as this would help young children improve their reading skills enormously. There are so many topics covered that an adult could explore with their children - from acceptance of others that are deemed different to themselves, kindness, having the courage to explore new activities, and an appreciation of nature. It also highlights the importance to be tolerant and respectful of other lifestyles. Children must be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and build confidence in their ability and this delightful story of Ollie and his friends does an exceptional job to facilitate that.
