Weird & Wacky Creatures: Strange, Weird Animals That Share Our World!: The Weird & Wacky Planet Series: Volume 1 is a non-fiction, educational picture book for children written by K.B. Carr and illustrated by Kelsey Leigh. In this information-packed book, Carr introduces eight “weird and wacky creatures” including the star-nosed mole, the capybara, and the babirusa. She provides details about each animal including their IUCN status, physical details, food sources, predators, and behavior. She also offers fun projects related to each animal, which use objects found in most households. Each animal is shown in photographs, including pictures of offspring when available. Her appendices include an index, a Glossary of Terms, and a listing of references and photo credits.
Weird & Wacky Creatures will thrill anyone who loves animals, and I can just about guarantee that no matter how animal-savvy you are, there will be at least one new creature for you to learn about in this book. And even those creatures who are a bit more familiar, such as the capybara, are dealt with in such detail that one finishes the section feeling enriched and more knowledgeable. K.B. Carr’s text is never dull or didactic, and learning about the animals highlighted in this book was fascinating and fun. It’s obvious throughout that the author thoroughly researched each animal, and her presentation is professional while still geared to a younger audience. Kelsey Leigh’s illustrations are fabulous, colorful, and just quirky enough to make the reader smile and pause to appreciate them. And the photographs selected bring each animal to life most brilliantly. Weird & Wacky Creatures is a grand read -- one that will make the reader look forward to future volumes. It’s most highly recommended.
