We Were Soldiers Too: The Second Korean War is the third of five books currently available in author Bob Kern's on-going series detailing different theaters of the Cold War. This book is perhaps the most pertinent to our times, as it retells the story of the brave young men tasked with protecting the DMZ between the two Koreas in the aftermath of war, and lays out in horrific detail how tenuous that peace really was. And as it turns out, it was no peace at all. Many men died during that so-called 'peace', and there were times when the war came perilously close to reigniting. Such a renewed war would have threatened the entire region, and could possibly have even led to World War III. Pertinent to our times, indeed!
Told in the clipped, matter-of-fact style of a period news report, We Were Soldiers Too: The Second Korean War describes the day-to-day struggle of a few good men simply trying to stay alive in a place where the fighting was supposed to be long over. We see through their eyes as they contend almost nightly with enemy infiltrators, booby traps, raids, and outright attacks by North Korean forces while the hands of the US and ROK soldiers were effectively tied. Think the war ended in '53? Think again. Bob Kern delivers a gut-wrenching, in-your-face account of what those brave young men went through, and in at least a few cases what they went through when they returned home. It is an eye-opener, to say the least, and it shines a new light on a decades-old conflict that has once again reared its ugly head. I enjoyed this book very much, and I learned a lot!
