He joined the army, she went to college, and they had full lives. When she saw a newspaper article on social media that he wrote, she contacted him, offering her assistance. Marie supported him through his disability, expanding his world with video phone chats and visits. Every vignette is connected to food they share, providing insights into his struggles with his congenital condition and their growing relationship. Author Mark Anthony Smith has skillfully crafted an intriguing novella in We Can Order the Same or Taste Each Other's. This unforgettable treatise on the physical and emotional needs of a person with a debilitating disability is wonderfully, and many times sadly, insightful.
The basic needs of human interaction are beautifully depicted throughout this novella. Beginning with the need to eat, and the opportunities to make dining an enriching experience for a relationship’s evolution is certainly thought-provoking. An attentive reader can find much meaning in each food selection, from carrot cake to spiced lentil soup. Additionally, the topics they discuss while eating reveal much about the relationship. How the relationship progresses as his condition worsens is fascinating. The style of writing is captivating, engaging the reader throughout each section. We Can Order the Same or Taste Each Other's penned by Mark Anthony Smith is a treasure.
