Water and Blood by N.K. Carlson is the second book in The Chronicles of Terrasohnen. After they escaped from the Elven capital of Sardis, Reith and his companions, along with Prince Romulus, travel to Amisos to reach the Free Isles. First, they have to survive the desert and the terrors hidden there. They plan to travel to the Dwarven city of Balkh to warn them about the Shadow looming over Terrasohnen. But, they have to find a ship willing to take them. What follows is an epic fantasy adventure filled with pirate ships and fighting, the revealing of ancient secrets concerning a prophecy, and more questions. Can Reith survive the reach of the Shadow and survive to fulfill his destiny? Then there is also Dema.
Author N.K. Carlson has continued creating enchantment and mystery in Water and Blood after setting solid foundations in Shadow and Sword. The descriptions are rich and colorful, stimulating all the senses. There are surprises around every corner, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat. The character development in the second book takes off nicely from the first. I wouldn’t recommend reading this as a stand-alone. You should read the first book to truly understand the emotional connections the different characters have with one another. For me, there was an underlying theme of the Christian faith running through both books that I found connected me to the characters better. Suitable for young adult readers and fantasy fans, N.K. Carlson will not disappoint. I truly hope we have not seen the last of Reith and his new friends.
