Warehouse Dreams by Theresa Halvorsen is a romance that focuses on perseverance and embracing differences. The Wilds are people with abilities who are treated as outsiders by the Bred, people who were genetically designed by their wealthy parents. The Wilds are rejected by society, seen as freaks. They often end up institutionalized and sedated by The Guardians when they are deemed unsafe for society. Miriam founded Phillip's Academy for the Advancement of Wilds, a school providing a safe haven for the Wilds where they can learn how to control their abilities to give them a chance to hide in society. Kendle was one of Miriam's rescues who now works for her at the Academy, nicknamed The Warehouse. Kendle is a tireless advocate for the Wilds children that they rescue, even when she butts heads with Miriam. The long hours working with little pay, coupled with the high stress of working with the Wilds and keeping her own abilities in check has Kendle feeling overwhelmed. Then Stephen, a Pure Bred, shows up as the new telepathy teacher and invades her dreams, setting her senses reeling.
I enjoyed Warehouse Dreams. It reminded me of Charles Xavier working with young mutants in X-Men, with the added bonus of the lead characters being female. Theresa Halvorsen tells a classic tale of love overcoming prejudice with the twist of magical abilities thrown in to spice things up. I loved Kendle's spirit and determination to help others no matter the cost. She is a flawed, all too human (although gifted) woman who any reader will easily identify with. Miriam was a character that I enjoyed disliking as the tale progressed. Kendle and Stephen's relationship was initially awkward but grew along with the characters. I was pleased with the ending, although I'm hoping for another book because I'm dying for more!
