A tale inhabited by a dysfunctional protagonist, or is she? Her brother and the social workers think so. On the other hand, Wally thinks people just don’t want to understand her, except for her favorite nephew Nigel. “You've got to understand about Wally...” The first sentence instantly grabbed my interest like a moth to a flame; of course, without the peril aspect. To others, Wally is good at deceiving people and has her own dangerous record, such as pulling out an old lady’s oxygen tube – which she didn't. Only Nigel, Wally’s favorite nephew, cares enough to investigate and prove his aunt’s innocence. Wally’s life is an eventful one – born to a mother that talks to a fridge, a father that she never knew and the tragic fate of her beloved pet chicken. To me, Wally is a survivor. She moves on with her life despite the obstacles better than anyone else. Author NovaMelia amazingly delivers a thought-provoking and unique story about eccentric personalities in "Wally Wander". Some ethical dilemmas in this story are things that would haunt readers’ minds for long.
Is it dangerous to be her friend? After reading the novel, my answer would be no. Her quirks are not her flaws but her strengths. It keeps her alive among people who tries too hard to define normalcy. There is a lot we can learn from Wally and her ‘space bubble’. To quote Wally herself, “I have my own place, you see.” She really does.
