Doctor Carol Turner always took pride in herself as a physician who had the ear of her patients and knew exactly what to do or say to make them feel at ease. When she started experiencing difficulties in cycling activities which used to be the norm for her, she thought nothing of it until she went for a checkup. Nothing could have prepared her for the experience when the roles were reversed upon discovering she had just been diagnosed with cancer. Waldy, Myelo & Me is the story of her battle not only to survive but to fight her disease and the amazing journey of recovery that she underwent.
Carol Turner M.D. breaks down the stages of her battle to outlast the cancer that nearly killed her in Waldy, Myelo & Me. She explains her case history much like the consummate professional she is by going into the details of the nature of her ailment. The way she talks about her motivation for going into pediatric medicine and the milestones she achieved in her personal and professional paths creates a clear picture of the woman behind the pen. This humanizes her in the eyes of the reader and debunks the general misconception that medical professionals are a detached lot when it comes to dealing with the fears of their patients. Turner's emotional outbursts and her use of nicknames that will sometimes evoke laughter from the reader serve to lighten the tone of what is sometimes a moving reading experience. Living with Waldenstrom’s lymphoma or any other cancer can be a massive drain on any individual but Turner shows us that with determination and an effective support system, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel.
