Tricia Cundiff pens an awe-inspiring story in Waiting on Faith. Patch grips his family history in his hands. This book saved him, and now it has drawn him back to his family’s cottage on the island of Sanibel. Holding the journal, he longingly waits for Lizzie to arrive. Standing on the beach, Patch asks Lizzie to marry him. He presents her with a ring and the beloved family journal. Lizzie says, “Yes,” and is eager to begin reading the treasured words of Patch’s great-great-grandmother. However, Lizzie is burdened, she feels unworthy of real happiness and a future with Patch. Lizzie retreats to read in solitude. Soon, she becomes immersed in Magdalena’s journal. With each turn of the page, the past collides with the present. Lizzie, a mountain girl with an evil past, wonders if she and her beach boy, Patch, can really share a future together. Lizzie, full of doubt, prays, asking God to help her believe. After all, if a young Spanish girl and a pirate can find true love, maybe there is hope for her and Patch.
Waiting on Faith by Tricia Cundiff reveals the power of the faith that transcends generations. Written in a journalistic style, the narrative takes you on a journey into the past and then back to the present, creating a story within the story. The thematic flow throughout the narrative is the value of heritage, especially regarding purpose and destiny. I enjoyed the diversity of the characters and the blending of their individual stories. The characters are relatable. Their tragic experiences reveal their strengths and their weaknesses. Enduring, and then facing their pain is what causes them to grow. The effect of this growth is faith - the willingness to trust and believe, let go, and ultimately transform from victim to victor. The varying contrasts within the story create an interesting ebb and flow: ancient and contemporary, ocean and mountains, strict Spanish tradition versus the pirate way of life. My favorite contrasting element was the unexpected relationship between the two heroines with their animal companions; one has a parrot and the other a bear. This story touched my heart; it contains beautiful insights and meaningful biblical truths. Waiting on Faith is a testament of God’s forgiveness and the power of love. It portrays the hope of future generations and the importance of praying and believing for those who follow after you.
