Vermilion Flames is a work of fiction in the science fiction, alternative history, and adventure subgenres, and is the opening novel in the Midnight War series. The work is best suited to the general adult reading audience. Penned by author Adam Fernandez, this immersive novel paints a dystopian picture of a future where progress comes at the cost of souls. In a world shadowed by ruin, the Republic and its church reign with oppressive force, leaving no moon or planet free from flames and bloodshed. Amidst this chaos, the Vermilion Coalition emerges as a rebel force challenging the Republic's authority. The story follows Kaya al Vardan on her quest to uncover the truth behind her mother's mysterious death, leading her to confront the Republic's oppressive regime. Meanwhile, Silas Beckett, High Commander of the Pandora Fleet, grapples with his own demons as he seeks to capture the elusive leader of the Vermilion Coalition, Hex.
Author Adam Fernandez puts a lot of imagination and passion into a well-crafted narrative brimming with tension and intrigue, drawing me into the struggles of the characters against a backdrop of oppression and rebellion. The complex interplay between Kaya's quest for justice and Silas's pursuit of redemption was realized well with compelling dialogue and a strong sense of attitude and introspection, inviting reflection on themes of power, sacrifice, and the human capacity for resilience in the face of adversity. The pacing was brilliant, moving between these poignant character moments and the next big, exciting challenge that will test them. As the twisting plot unfolded, I found myself deeply invested in the characters' fates, eagerly turning the pages to uncover the secrets of this captivating universe. Overall, Vermilion Flames is highly recommended as a gripping tale of resistance and redemption in a world consumed by war and tyranny, suitable for sci-fi fans everywhere.
