Veiled Tide: The Sefwarian Nyss Series, Book 2 by Erica-Jane Battisson follows on from the events of Honest Dealing, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the former life Merryn. Battisson transports us to Cornwall in 1785, filled with smugglers’ plots, vicious warriors, and tenuous links to the magical realm of Sefwarian Nyss. Life as a Cempalli soldier is not easy, but seventeen-year-old Kerenza knows she must survive the many trials of her training to protect her homeland from those who would claim it as their own.
Erica-Jane Battisson takes a unique approach to sequels in this thrilling story, which can be enjoyed as a standalone read and for its series-linking backstories. As a central protagonist, Kerenza’s 1700s persona is highly empowered and engaging, showcasing the potential of strong young women on missions, which is always the basis for any female-centric tale. The fantasy aspects are very well developed, with a keen sense of atmosphere and detail in the worldbuilding that makes the Nyss lands and the historical settings immersive. I thoroughly enjoyed the emotional developments between Kerenza and the other characters, with romance or friendship always possible. Veiled Tide is recommended for fans of the existing series and fantasy enthusiasts looking for a gripping, well-written story.
