Nick O’Shea liked freedom, freedom to pick up and go at his will. He lived on the Windwalker, a boat he had inherited from his uncle. However, things were changing in his life. He had met Sandy, and he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, and he gave her his grandmother’s ring.
Nick is a bounty hunter. He works for John, the owner of an exclusive bonding agency. Many wealth people commit crimes; they hire a bond agency to bail them, out and then they skip out. It is Nick’s job to track them down. He has had some interesting adventures, and his friends look forward to gathering around him to hear his latest tale.
Over a 5-year period, wealthy business owner, James Preston, misappropriated over 50 billion dollars from his company’s pension fund. At his arraignment hearing, the judge set bail at 50 million. Preston called John to bail him out, and then promptly skipped out. 50 million dollars would ruin the bond company. John knew he needed the best, so he called Nick. The chase was on. Preston always managed to elude capture. Then Sandy was drawn into the situation, her life was in great danger. Can Nick save her from a watery grave and apprehend Preston?
Vanishing Act is Todd McCormick’s first fiction creation. I suspect it will not be his last. Nick is a strong character, yet he has a vulnerable side, especially when it comes to Sandy. Sandy is loyal and loves with her heart. She proves she will do anything to protect her man. The characters are likable. McCormick has a talent for dialogue. Many find dialogue the most difficult part of writing; many never master the art. McCormick makes it look easy. The pace of Vanishing Act is fast-moving; it keeps readers on the edge of their seat. All in all, this is a good book. Fans of mystery and suspense will like this one.
