A cargo ship washes up on a Philippine beach with no crew on board. All that remains are scorch marks and some mysterious silver and red spheres. Three months later, a resident of a small Austrian town arrives home to discover every resident has disappeared; once again, only scorch marks and spheres remain. NSA contract agents Alton and Mallory Blackwell are called on to investigate and figure out what happened. What they discover is shocking. An ancient virus has been brought back to life by ore drilling on an island in the Arctic Sea. An Iranian terrorist group is aware of the virus and plans to release it on the world. Can the agents find a cure for the virus and prevent it from spreading? And just what are those spheres? Read Vanished by Steven F. Freeman to find out.

Vanished is book 16 of the Blackwell Files. However, it can easily be read as a stand-alone as there are only a few minor references to previous books. Steven F. Freeman has included these details for people who have read them all but these will appear insignificant to other readers. In this novel, Alton and Mallory are the lead protagonists, joined by a team of scientists, Bernard Poole, Ray Groves, Ivy Lavigne, and Sebastian Cole. Alton has a lot going on, including attempting to negotiate peace between the Norwegians, Russians, and Chinese, who are all interested in the ore coming out of the island. Vanished is a scientific, political, environmental, and medical thriller where the action begins from the first line and doesn’t let up until the very end. It’s a page-turning rollercoaster ride and is highly recommended.
