I absolutely loved Unwed (Volume 2) by Kay Chandler. It truly is a 1930s Southern Christian fiction romance. While this book can stand alone, I was happy to be reacquainted with Veezie from Volume 1’s Lunacy and fell in love with her all over again. Veezie had a hard life growing up in an old Alabama shack without much money or possessions. She lived a wild life spending time in cheap bars with a variety of men. When Veezie suddenly finds her life turned around and becomes the rich girl living in a big fancy house, it takes a lot for her to learn how to become a lady. She quickly learns that finding God, hiding behind pretty dresses, and learning to speak proper English is not enough, and that her past will still come back to haunt her.
Reverend Shepherd Jackson has recently lost the wife he loved more than life itself and is convinced he should not look for love or happiness ever again. This changes quickly when he first sees Veezie and the two are instantly attracted to each other. His congregation and the local newspaper are aghast and begin calling for his dismissal. The question then remains: does true love or the town’s prejudice win? You will have to read this well written love story to find out those answers.
Unwed kept me up way past my bedtime; it was impossible to stop reading until the very last page. Kay Chandler has written a perfect story. I could not help but feel that Veezie was an old friend and I shared in both her joy and pain. Everyone who enjoys a warm, loving, romantic story with some old Southern traditions and a sprinkling of God’s wisdom must read this book as it is truly a winner.
