What would make anyone kill a helpless woman? This was one of the many questions that raced through the minds of retired Las Vegas Metropolitan PD detective Taryn Winter and her former partner detective Daniel Brady, as they stared at a pile of dead bodies they had uncovered at a casino in the city. It had all started with Daniel inviting Taryn to help him investigate a case involving the mysterious disappearance of two hookers, and before they knew it, the LVMPD was answering a call reporting a murder incident at a casino, where they found the bodies. The perpetrator had been clever enough to leave no traces behind, and this only made things harder for Taryn and Daniel. It got much worse when an acquaintance of Taryn was found dead in the casino during the investigations. With few leads and a hard-to-trace meth addict as their best shot at identifying the perpetrator, Taryn and Daniel were hard on the suspect's trail, only for them to realize the latter was someone they knew. Who was behind the murders? Get yourself Karen Crawford’s Underbelly to find out more.
Karen Crawford had me hooked on her gripping page-turner, keeping me on edge with the ominous tone. She is a master of the craft. Crawford hatches an intriguing plot in Underbelly, featuring spell-binding twists and an exciting cast. She gives impressively vivid depictions of scenes and characters through short and twisted sentences. The choice of words gives the story a professional touch. The author uses a tremendously dramatic effect in the scenes. This made reading the book feel like watching a movie. Crawford presents a great sense of wit and profound sentimental depth in the narration. I reveled in the sarcasm and humor in the conversations between the characters. The author develops her characters wonderfully, bringing out their traits boldly and at the same time highlighting their complex nature. It is interesting that in eight years of marriage, Taryn still had no idea what her “Mr. Right” was made of.
