Under The Trees by Ashley Maker is a young adult romance novel. The protagonist of the novel, Princess Araya, flees from her kingdom so she can escape her violent marriage. She manages to escape and runs away to the neighboring kingdom. There, she unexpectedly runs into Prince Thoredmund, or Prince Thor for short. Prince Thor learns of Princess Araya’s situation and helps her to hide and survive on the lands outside of her kingdom. As time goes on, both Araya and Thor fall in love with each other. However, their love is forbidden. The alliance between the two kingdoms is starting to fall apart and will fall even further if the Prince and Princess end up together. Will Araya be forced to go back to her kingdom and face her marriage head on? Or will Araya and Thor risk confessing their love to both kingdoms so they can live a happily ever after?
Under The Trees is a delightful light read that I believe people of all ages can enjoy. It is the type of book you finish in one sitting because it sucks you in so quickly that you won’t be able to think about anything else until it's done. The writing in this novel is very good. I never got sidetracked and enjoyed the journey that Ashley Maker’s words allowed me to go on. Maker has a talent in which she creates two lovely characters and has them come together to become something incredible. Araya and Thor are both likeable characters and reading their love story was a treat. They are both flawed people, but in the end they both end up doing what they know is the right thing and I was happy to watch them grow. Again, this book is a great escape and I suggest you take the time to read it. If you love a good historical and fantasy read, then this is definitely the book for you.
