Uncle Jed’s Secret is the third installment in the Between Dark and Light series by Chris von Halle. Twelve-year-old Jason visits his beloved Uncle Jed as his parents were going on a business trip. Jed has lost his wife, Eleanor, but even grief can't explain the changes Jason sees in his uncle. First, he didn't recognize Jason when they met. Then Jed refused to play a funny zombie video game that he used to enjoy. Jed takes away Jason's phone and forbids him to leave the house. He tells Jason that his family is in great danger because of him. By night, Jason fights with an alien entity that tries to grab hold of his soul. How does all this connect to a teddy bear stolen from the room of the tragically diseased young Angelica Swenson? And what should Jason do to shed light on the gloomy events around his family?
Uncle Jed’s Secret is narrated from Jason's perspective and we see the inner world of this likable kid with all his struggles and doubts. Jason is curious and loves horror books by the great R.L. Stine. I believe that this tale is written in the best tradition of that prominent author. Chris von Halle manages to keep his young readers in suspense till the last page, creating a captivating plot with astonishing twists and an unpredictable ending. The writing style is engaging for children and will enrich their vocabulary with many compelling words and figures of speech. The book explains brilliantly that sanctimony has nothing to do with faith and is not acceptable. Young fans of fantasy, horror, adventure and family dramas would undoubtedly appreciate this tale. Although the book is recommended for children from ten years of age, it will also be of interest to adult admirers of supernatural novels.
