Trauma can have a lifelong effect on people, stunting their mental, physical, emotional, or even social development to a large extent. Sparrow Spaulding is a trauma specialist who suffered from childhood trauma at an early age and continued to be roped into its vicious cycle until her adult years due to an amalgamation of events. After seeking counseling and delving into a variety of trauma-recovery tools, she discovered that when something traumatic happens to us, facets of our inner self get frozen in time. Through Uncaged, Spaulding seeks to help readers on their healing journey through her own trauma recovery model, the Facet Integration Technique. This book provides readers with an in-depth analysis of the various types of trauma, the long-term effects of violence, healing from abuse, recovering self-worth, and much more.

Author Sparrow Spaulding uses anecdotes from her own life and that of her clients to paint a vivid picture of every aspect of trauma and the subsequent journey to recovery. There is much in the narrative that feels revolutionary and, at times, may even seem radical. But Spaulding backs up her beliefs with well-researched and reasoned arguments, which makes the content all the more relatable and engaging to read. Uncaged is informative and illuminating in a way that is accessible to the general public. There are questionnaires and helpful insights at the end of each chapter to help readers fully grasp the contents of each chapter. I found the book thoroughly riveting, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking recovery from any kind of trauma.

Uncaged: Trauma Recovery Using Facet Integration Technique is the product of years of work on a trauma recovery model. Sparrow Spaulding begins by narrating her own experiences, allowing the reader to understand the complexity of her research work. She then clarifies what trauma involves and describes the different types. To resolve them, she uses a practical method that explains we have not just one inner child but several with us throughout our lives. These are what are referred to as our facets, and we have to identify them to be able to work with them. To expand on this, Spaulding describes real cases based on her experiences with her patients. She includes activities that can be employed to recognize and face our traumas.

The case studies described by Sparrow Spaulding are striking and express real-life traumas of various types, so I recommend that the reader maintain an open mind. Although the topics can become emotional, she speaks with empathy. Her narration is fluid and easy to follow because she speaks from experience. I liked the way she handled the topics of observation and experimentation without judgment. The activities she recommends have examples based on her situation and that of her patients. She doesn't just discuss adults but also includes tips to help children feel that they are in a safe environment. I found the content to be comprehensive, discussing the mind and giving tips to improve health. I liked Uncaged because of its honesty. It is motivating because it helps us to recognize and counteract the self-sabotage we can cause ourselves in daily life.

Uncaged: Trauma Recovery Using Facet Integration Technique by Sparrow Spaulding presents a groundbreaking new theory and approach to healing and integrating trauma. This is a collection of nearly everything the author has done on her own healing journey along with her own trauma recovery model that she calls the Facet Integration Technique, an approach derived from years of observation, contemplation, and experimentation. It allows you to dig deep into the root cause of your trauma. Filled with exercises that help you to get to know yourself on a very intimate level, facet integration allows you to feel rooted in your mind and body, allowing you to acknowledge a particular stage of trauma in your life that triggers an arrested development.

Sparrow Spaulding doesn’t fill her self-help book with statistics about people experiencing trauma. Rather, she fills it with plenty of question-and-answer activities that will help you uncover the facets of your traumatic experiences that stifle your well-being. It’s not uncommon to experience a traumatic event early in life, such as the case of Spaulding herself. That’s why she understands the challenges besetting the road to healing. When you start to engage yourself in the activities presented herein, a lot of uncomfortable feelings, emotions, and memories can surface, which is fine, because not addressing them could worsen your mental, emotional, and physical health. Facet Integration Technique makes you work on establishing safety with your own mind and body by using safe-coping skills like journaling and meditation. Uncaged is a must-read book for those seeking to recover and confront their deep-seated traumas. It is a book that helps you to heal by acknowledging the past while remaining centered on the present and looking forward to the future.
