Unblinded: One Man's Courageous Battle to Regain his Vision by Traci Medford-Rosow with Kevin Coughlin is a true account into the journey that Kevin Coughlin experienced as the world around him subtly turned into darkness. On the outside, Kevin Coughlin is a healthy young man in his 30s, and besides his need to drink constantly, nothing could explain why he was gradually losing his sight. As he reflects, he wonders if things would have turned out differently if he had only listened to his neuro-ophthalmologist years ago. He had been warned about drinking and smoking. Kevin Coughlin discovers that he has a rare genetic disorder, Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy. Kevin did not know that his DNA carried this family trait. In Unblinded, you will see how what we say and the way we think does become our reality.
What an eye opener reading Unblinded was for me. There is a saying in Proverbs 18:21 - “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” The struggles with alcoholism, life, and now being blind caused Kevin to be forced into making a mental as well as physical paradigm shift into willing his life back to wellness, both from drinking and in losing his sight. Kevin begins to realize that, as he muddles through his battle, he is a living, walking miracle and will never look at and view life the same as he once did.
