Unaltered: Cortii 4.5 by J C Steel is a short science fiction suspense novella about Irin and a group of bodyguards called the Cortii. Irin is summoned by his very important father, but Irin wisely hires the Cortii, and specifically Khyria, to protect him en route. Their destination is a dangerous place, filled with enemies who have no qualms about getting rid of anyone they see as a threat. Because of who and what Irin is, he faces overwhelming odds, and only the bodyguards he hires can see him safely back home. Or can they?
The tension between Irin and Khyria reminds me of a young adult love story in some ways, and their relationship is clearly communicated through the varied expressions. Like the Twilight series, their nuances, their inflections, everything is highly detailed and developed to clearly describe their relationship. But unlike the vampire series, this story moves in the sci-fi direction and keeps the tight suspense element to the very end.
I enjoyed this writing style where every word worked well to move the story forward. Although this is a part of a series, you can pick up enough details from the story so that it can stand alone. There is enough backstory to keep you intrigued and curious, enough dialog to appreciate the well-developed characters, and enough action and description to keep you reading the book and not wanting to put it down. I recommend Unaltered: Cortii 4.5 by J C Steel for readers who enjoy science fiction tales with a strong suspense element.
