Two of a Kind by Celesta Thiessen is a futuristic children’s story with a Christian theme. Faith has been removed from her family and placed in an orphanage, along with other children who have a special ability that the government wishes to suppress. A boy called Fisher rescues her, and the two attempt to escape on a spaceship to the safety of another planet where they can rejoin their families. Fisher has special powers and can communicate through telepathy. Faith discovers that when she calls for help to ‘someone’, or whatever may be out there, then unusual things begin to happen. As Faith learns the truth about who Fisher is and what happened to her family, it isn’t long before her own special abilities become more obvious.

Two of a Kind is book one in a series of children’s books. Well written and fairly short and very readable, it will appeal to preteen readers who enjoy futuristic or fantasy style stories. I love the relationship between Faith and Fisher, and Fisher’s certainty that God is out there and hears him. This makes this a story that promotes faith and comfort in difficult situations. As such, it is a good addition for anyone looking for children’s books that promote the Christian faith through story without being preachy or religious. The main characters are likable and the plot moves along at a good pace, with a mixture of mystery, intrigue and suspense as the children embark on their journey to safety. The names of the main characters reflect two Christian themes or ideas – one of having faith and one of reaching out to others with God’s message. Celesta Thiessen’s book has a lovely message about trust and keeping the faith that all will turn out well in the end.
