Clemens Suter's adventure novel, Two Journeys, is a story of one man's survival and epic journey after a global viral pandemic kills millions of people very quickly. Alan, a biologist from Berlin, is on a business trip in Tokyo when the virus strikes. He survives but Tokyo is a city of dead people, with no power, no communications. Alan is determined to return home to his family in Berlin. He plans a journey from Tokyo to Korea, China, Russia and eventually to Berlin. As he travels westwards, he sees the deadly devastation of the pandemic everywhere. Two German Shepherds, Bo and King, join him on his journey. In Russia, he meets other survivors who are in radio contact with survivors in other countries. Can he overcome the impossible odds against him and return home?
I enjoyed reading Clemens Suter's Two Journeys because of its theme of enduring hope during catastrophic devastation. From start to finish, I found the story gripping and riveting. I liked Suter’s development of Alan's character. Alan feels a deep loss as the world he knew is gone. But with intelligence, ingenuity, and grit, Alan learns to adapt, to overcome challenging obstacles. With a grim tenacity, he travels on to survive perilous and life-threatening situations. I liked the turn in the story as Alan meets other survivors. Some are friendly, compassionate; their stories are of courage, human frailty, and heartbreak. The novel becomes thought-provoking when Alan meets others who are intent on gaining power in a changing world. An exciting novel of one man's daring hope and journey to return home.
