Alex Pendergraf is a Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Iowa and a powerful authority in his field, a man with a sharp mind and a curiosity that is insatiable. When he learns that a horrific mass murder has occurred in Stockton, California, he can’t resist investigating. He has a feeling that the incident can be related to his research on prions that cause Mad Cow Disease. But as he digs into the mystery, he discovers something even deadlier; an agent called the Stockton Prion that can incite victims to aggression, mood swings and violence. The problem is that it is spreading fast and time is certainly running out. As the violence escalates, Alex and his team must find answers fast before Stockton is decimated by violence.
When there is a crisis and time is running out before it escalates into an irredeemable disaster, it is interesting how characters react to the pressure. This is the secret that makes Twist by Alan S. Kolok a great success. First he creates a huge problem, then a compelling and focused protagonist, and the result is a page-turner. Alan S. Kolok introduces plot twists and surprises in the narrative that readers can’t predict. Professor Pendergraf is a sophisticated character, an intelligent scientist, and it is interesting to watch him in the face of such a powerful threat. The supporting characters are well developed and they feel real. The author succeeds in creating the balance I love to see when it comes to the different elements of writing — setting, plot, character, and suspense — without allowing one element to dominate the narrative, yet he keeps it interesting from page to page. A riveting read, indeed.
