Bitten by both a bear and a wolf, and barely surviving their battle with each other, Jace’s survival was a miracle, his recovery far sooner than possible. Within days his body had healed, and he felt stronger, much stronger. A new girl at school, Kate, has a strange effect on him. She’s a stranger but familiar in some way, and his attraction to her is impossible to deny. New and different things are happening to Jace; he’s developed a trigger temper, inhuman strength, and an invitation to join Max’s exclusive crew. He learns that he’s about to become a shifter and his whole world is thrown into chaos in Twice Bitten (Shifting Alliances Duology Book 1).
Author Angel Leya adeptly meshes ancient mythologies, fantasies, and lore into a young adult story with a unique premise set in the modern-day USA. The story builds slowly and methodically as Jace learns he’s about to become a shifter and all that this supernatural event entails. But there’s something abnormal about Jace’s transition; something that neither he nor his mentor, Kate, can explain. The changes that occur in his body, his relationships, and most importantly his attraction and emotional ties to Kate continually create situations that cause havoc with his mental and physical well-being. His status at school and his relationships with his parents and friends are severely challenged. Angel Leya takes the reader through it all, step by step, building to a cliff-hanger conclusion that replicates the popular film series methodologies for ensuring viewers (in this case readers) will watch or buy the next episode/book. The techniques of writing from characterization to scene-setting to dialogue and grammatical proficiency are excellent. The story flows well and I'm sure fans of Stephenie Meyer and other popular young adult authors will thoroughly enjoy Twice Bitten.
