'Twas the First Night Before Christmas by Mary Beth Vonk is a charming rendition of the birth of Christ using a familiar format. This is a child-friendly book with simple yet nice artwork. The details of the biblical story of the birth of Jesus are accurate and well explained. One part of this story that is often written incorrectly (the wise men visiting Jesus in the stable) is accurately portrayed here.
Although this is a familiar and simple tale, Scriptural accuracy is mandatory and Mary Beth Vonk has remained true to what the Bible teaches. Children can sit with this book and understand the story via the artistic illustrations alone. There are many books of this type in the marketplace, but this one is something special. From the ride into Bethlehem, to the angel visiting the shepherds on the hill, to the actual birth and the eventual visit from the wise men, this book is well written and illustrated.
Mary Beth Vonk has presented a lovely children's book retelling the age-old story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Her attention to detail and accuracy are essential to this type of story and she has maintained Scriptural accuracy throughout the book. Mary Beth Vonk's 'Twas the First Night Before Christmas may very well become a new Christmas classic among both children and parents. Her rhythm of verse and her ability to get all of the relevant information into her story allow the events to flow and be easily understood by all ages. I would buy this book for my own grandchild.
