Turning Back the Clock by Gabi Plumm is the second book in The Scandals trilogy set in an old age home in northern Queensland, Australia. Once again, we meet the three old dears, Dottie, Dulcie, and Dee, but the star of the show is 77-year-old, 6-foot, red-haired Amazon Joan Holloway-Potts-Jones-Bristowe. She is the oldest resident at Rosehill Retirement Home and a major shareholder. A ruthless man-hunter, thus the long list of surnames, she implements a scheme to take the residence back into the 1960s to rejuvenate the elderly inhabitants. While redecoration is in progress, the oldies are sent on holiday, with many adventures along the way, introducing readers to some of the local attractions. These are not universally enjoyed by the oldies, but are interesting and informative as are the descriptions of the local flora and landscapes. The plan appears to be working well, but Joan has a secret that she only shares with a few, which may be the real reason her scheme is working. When the media and then the police become involved, events take a turn for the worse.
This is a delightful read as Gabi Plumm takes us into the world of an old age home. Turning the Clock Back sends the establishment residents back to the time of their youth, with bellbottoms, Beatlemania, and a world before electronic gadgets. The scenario is very tongue in cheek, as the residents are far from moribund, and are full of life and up to mischief. You cannot help but love each one of them, even the villains. The results are hilarious with twists and turns as married couples discover they are not married and others fall in love as they discover that it’s never too late. Their senses are heightened with a little help from yoga, meditation, water aerobics, and a recreational drug or two. If you think aging is something that happens to other people, think again; it can still be a new and exciting experience. This book is fun even if you are too young for a retirement home.
