Tumble Tails: Tilley Tumble is a children’s animal adventure picture book written and illustrated by Beth Thompson. Barley Burrow was home to many playful bunnies but Tilley was, without doubt, the bunny most likely to be tumbling any time you saw her. Tilley loved tumbling and gymnastics. Walking on her hands was second nature and swinging from the highest branches of the nearest tree was an irresistible treat. Her parents loved seeing Tilley’s joy in movement and obvious agility, even if she did make an awful mess in the house with her acrobatics. Tilley was excited when she discovered a leaflet at school, which announced that there was a new gym in Barley Burrow named Hoppa’s Gymnastics Club. Better still, they were hosting an open day for all the bunnies in the burrow. Tilley couldn’t wait! When she and her parents finally arrived on Open Day, Tilley was amazed by what she saw inside that gym.
Tumble Tails: Tilley Tumble is a fun and informative book about gymnastics and tumbling. The author, whose daughter is an aspiring gymnast, was inspired by her daughter’s enthusiasm to write this story and that enthusiasm spills over onto every page of this marvelous book. I loved watching as Tilley discovers the other tumblers at Hoppa’s and could understand her initial fears and insecurity as she begins learning more about gymnastics. Thompson’s artwork is brilliant, especially her drawings of Tilley and her tumbling. You can really get the movements of those bunny gymnasts as they spin, leap and twirl. Coach Hoppa is a marvelous introduction for new gymnasts for what it would be like to work with a coach. I can’t think of a better book to get kids off their couches and interested in movement and gymnastics. Tumble Tails: Tilley Tumble is most highly recommended.
