Travel Bug by Avril Jones is a beautiful and colorful travel story for young readers featuring a little critter named Bugsey, who travels with the Brown Family. Bugsey is a little bug who lives in a corner of the Brown residence. His aunt offers for him to stay with her when she delivers the sad news that Bugsey’s mom perished after being sucked up by a vacuum cleaner. This saddens Bugsey and gives him a need to get away from it all. The good thing is that the Browns are taking a vacation to Portugal, and Bugsey is going to slip secretly into a bag to join them. What follows is Bugsey’s account of his travels with the Browns as he narrates the sights, smells, and sounds of Portugal.
Travel Bug is a highly imaginative tale. We share our homes with tiny insects. Avril Jones gives a lot of thought to this fact and hatched the idea of a tiny insect with a strong wanderlust who travels with a family unaware of his presence. As for the artwork, S. Raymond’s solid digital illustrations have artistic energy that enticingly shows Bugsey’s travel adventure and the interesting facets of Portugal. Travel Bug makes for an excellent reading activity for young children and a great way to introduce them to the joys of travel and how to observe safety along the way. Given its length, this book is ideal for middle-grade and intermediate readers.
