Traitor’s Knot by Cryssa Bazos is a riveting historical romance set against the backdrop of political turmoil, a historic moment in the English Civil War. It’s England in 1650, King Charles I has just been executed by Parliament, and the country is experiencing a semblance of peace. James Hart is a man loyal to the crown and who refuses the tyranny of the new government. Committed to seeing the king’s son restored, he works as a highwayman to raise funds for the cause. But he soon meets Elizabeth Seton, a beautiful woman considered to be the daughter of a traitor by many. This kind woman who shelters fugitives, and whose life is risked in many ways, falls in love with Hart. The reader is taken on a rollicking ride in a romance that faces many challenges, and the reader discovers what it takes for two ardent lovers to stay together.
One of the things I look for in historical novels is how well the author recreates the setting in which the story takes place. I must say that Cryssa Bazos has done an awesome job in this regard, crafting dialogues that mimic the native accents and culture, and creating settings that are as absorbing as they are vivid. Traitor’s Knot is a gripping tale of courage, love, and enduring commitment, a story that is well-imagined and executed with grace and mastery. The plot is fast-paced and it has surprises that will jolt readers. This is a compelling story with powerful historical references.
