Train of Thoughts by Veronica Thornton is a compilation of original poetry, essays, and short stories. The essays and poetry read in a stream of consciousness format, the former really having a conversational feel and the latter employing the use of syllabic beats and rhyme schemes to punctuate otherwise freeform poems into true cohesiveness. The short stories read slightly longer than flash fiction but still retain an entire arc within an impressively condensed tale. All range in length and tone, from the passionate Telling Times, a generational story that taps into a granddaughter witnessing the power of her grandmother's words in a prophetic, visionary experience to works like Serendipity, a three-line poem able to prompt real reflection alongside its poetess.
First things first, Veronica Thornton is an incredibly talented poet. What I enjoyed most while reading through Train of Thoughts were these pieces in particular. The essays are thought-provoking and the short stories are a bit unpolished but still good...but it's the poetry that steals the show. It is the poetry that caused the hair on my arms to rise and me to read verses out loud to my older, college-aged daughter, who agreed they were exceptional. My favorite is His Kitty, which is a gorgeously sensual and creative ode to femininity, desire, and pleasure. Thornton is not coy and I am grateful for it, particularly as she is courageous enough to shatter the glass ceiling and let the shards fall down on everyone who believes a woman's sexuality should be tamed. Thornton is powerful and it drips from every page, from every stanza, from every verse...from every word. It's time to listen.
