Who hasn't wished for the impossible? To be in someone else’s shoes? To have what someone else possess? Life is always greener on the other side, right? But how many people get their wish? When Darcy and Cybil wonder what it would be like to live a life totally different from the one they live now, their wishes come true. From feeding the chickens before school and wandering around the halls of school relatively unnoticed, Darcy wakes one morning to see the beautiful face of Cybil in the mirror. All of a sudden her nondescript life morphs into an existence of popularity and a social status she only dreamed of. Now she had the attention of the alluring British exchange student, she was a cheerleader and her home life did not include chickens. Her wardrobe was full of designer labels and she had her own bathroom! Not too shabby. On the other hand, a girl Darcy only knew from a distance has taken her place and is forced to fit her spoiled, privileged lifestyle into an awkward and fashion disaster. Of course, Cybil wants her face back, but she has to admit that sitting down to the dinner table with all family members present is a nice perk to this alternative lifestyle.
Ann Herrick’s young adult novel "Trading Faces" is a fun read that explores an old idea of wanting to be someone else. This universal theme of switching places takes a fresh turn when romance is introduced and Darcy and Cybil realize that what they wanted was right in front of them the whole time. Good read!
