Grus Garret, a Save Blue Waters field ops agent, has one mission on his mind – find the killer who took out another SBW agent and their whistle blower. In Toxic Tide by C.J. Matthew, Grus is taking a few days before a dolphin relocation assignment to see if he can’t come up with any more clues to the murders that took place in New Jersey. His luck only gets worse, though, when he tires himself out on a swim and has to shift into dolphin form, landing on the beach in front of a beautiful young woman. Both know this is a dangerous situation, but the fact that Heather O’Donnell’s sister was the murdered whistle blower gives them a reason to put their differences aside and work together. Feeling the noose tightening, the Jersey mob boss responsible for polluting the ocean and killing the women calls in a contract killer with ideas of his own and the action escalates. Not known for cooperating well with others, can Grus overcome his issues and trust Heather enough to make progress on this case or will his luck finally run out?
Dolphin Shore Shifters Book 5, Toxic Tide is one more in the excellent string of books by C.J. Matthew. It’s good to see Grus stand out in his own volume, especially with the help of Olympic class swimmer Heather O’Donnell, who has demons of her own. Both characters are strong yet vulnerable in different ways and, as they manage to overcome their suspicions and natural tendencies in order to work together, a tremendous relationship is born. Toxic Tide is filled with exciting action scenes and there is great depth to the plot involving different agencies, alliances and family feuds. Another excellent story with a strong story line and great characters. Well worth reading, even as a stand-alone in this overall terrific series.
