Tour Guide Through Proverbs by Philip van Heusen is a Christian devotional study that walks you through the guidelines from the Book of Proverbs to help order your daily life. As Proverbs contain words of wisdom based on Solomon’s observations, the book reminds you about the difference between guidelines and guarantees. As a guideline, The Wisdom of Solomon has become another name for the Book of Proverbs, in which people find advice and direction about how to live wisely and in tune with what God has for them. The first six verses give an overview of the purpose of the entire book, wherein Solomon is advising a young man who desires to grow into a godly man. In the same vein, it guides you on how to live a life of wisdom, and to have peace even amid storms as you reserve your faith for God’s control.
Philip van Heusen provides an easy-to-read guide on what to expect in the Book of Proverbs. Some of Solomon’s wise and simple messages of truth have found their way into mainstream culture, and one of my favorites is, 'A soft answer turns away wrath.' That being said, Tour Guide Through Proverbs allows you to better understand how the collection of sayings in this book of the Bible functions as a guide to life, as it describes how to worship and obey God. As the word 'proverb' literally means 'to be like' in Hebrew, van Heusen illustrates how it is to be like a person who loves God. I personally like his take on how wisdom teaches us to stay away from temptation, and on Satan’s subtle strategy to draw us into sin. Tour Guide Through Proverbs is a beautiful devotional study recommended to anyone who wants to get the most out of the famed wisdom of Solomon.
