Torn by Jud Wilhite was a fabulous read! Wilhite explains how instead of asking, "Why?" when it comes to evil and suffering in this world, we should be asking, "Who?" The answer to "Who?" is God. Who will we trust in the calamities and challenges of life? Only God is worthy of that trust.
In the chapter titled "Reframing Your Expectations," Wilhite tells us that because God is God, He may do as He pleases even if we don't understand it or agree with it. This is important for us to understand. Too often we're presented with the "Christian-lite" version of prosperity preaching that says, if we just pray hard enough or have enough faith, that we'll get everything we want. What we need to hear is that God already provides us with everything we need, that He can provide us with what He wants us to have, and that we should be grateful that He doesn't give us what we deserve!
I laughed out loud when the author wrote, "If God and Satan were in a boxing ring, God would resemble Muhammad Ali in boxing skill, and Satan would resemble SpongeBob SquarePants."
Throughout the book, the author sprinkles take-aways in small sound bytes that summarize the bigger picture of each chapter. These would make great index cards to carry around with you to remind you how to fight for joy, deal with anger and depression, and commit your life to God even when you feel broken.
