To the Metal: A Paris of the South Mystery by Kendric Neal is set in Ashville, NC, a city that has rapidly grown into a mixture of hippies, hipsters, tourists and locals. Mack Eagan, former junior high football coach now turned private detective, mainly exists on domestic cases. One day a wealthy young man hires him to find out who and why someone has tried to kill him. During his investigation, Mack soon learns there is more to the story than expected. When the young man smashes into an embankment at 140 miles per hour, people, including family, are quick to claim it was either some type of accident or he was impaired. The police assume the boy was drunk or on drugs.
With the knowledge and assistance of the young man's sister, suffering a fatal medical condition but wise beyond her young years, Mack learns there's a lot more to the story. While a little unorthodox in his methods, Coach Mack proves to be very adept at what he does and during his continued investigation also discovers there are a lot of secrets… and that people are attempting to hide behind them.
I would classify To the Metal: A Paris of the South Mystery more of a cozy mystery. I particularly enjoyed reading this well written mystery story without excessive violence, sexual situations, or strong language. Kendric Neal has written a story with well developed and likable lead characters set in a not so typical location. The dialogue was good and appropriate to the situation. I feel he has developed a good story line that would support many sequels. Readers of cozy mystery stories will find it quite enjoyable. A very good story. I hope the author is planning on some sequels. Well done.
