To Hide From a Northern Wind: Spencer Creek is a work of fiction in the historical-to-contemporary and family saga sub-genres and was penned by author J. B. Millhollin. Spanning almost 150 years in its timeline, we find ourselves settled on the banks of Spencer Creek in Tennessee, where the story begins in the late nineteenth century. Two families with bordering farms, one led by Clem Jenkins and the other by Thomas Masters, begin an initially cordial neighborship. But as conflict and disagreement rise, this family feud travels through several generations, rising to dangerous and dramatic heights as we get closer and closer to the present day.
Author J. B. Millhollin takes readers through generations of family drama, and this is a drama that really does contain every emotion and situation you can think of. I particularly liked the flow of the novel to introduce us to the two families, and the way in which we come to know such a large ensemble of characters quite naturally through the progression of the novel. The action of the plot is well-organized and well-timed to deliver different revelations, and the flow from historical times to modernization really shows good research in the changing attitudes and ways of living straight out of the history books. The story has a retro feel and offers us a close bond with both families, making the anguish even more exciting as the two collide. Overall, I would certainly recommend To Hide From a Northern Wind to drama and history fans who are seeking a truly engrossing read.
