To Eris - Human (Payton Chronicles Book 1) by Ann Snizek is a young adult paranormal story about Eris, a girl who thinks she's gone mad when she discovers Nelson, a being called a lucent who manipulates living energy. Lucents have always been translucent to humans, so the discovery of Eris' ability is an interesting twist early on in this tale. Nelson's brother is ill from a disease that is affecting lucents. Then Eris discovers that her father, an acclaimed geneticist, might have been working on something that could cure the lucents. Nelson needs Eris' help. But Eris doesn't understand why her. She was just an ordinary human. How can she help a group of beings she never even knew existed?
Readers will enjoy the pun in this title and how that witticism carries throughout the book. There are powerful issues within this book that are bigger than a normal young adult paranormal. Issues like dealing with an estranged father, friendship, dealing with super powers, and how not to feel overwhelmed at the incredible news that you have a talent no one else has (or could even imagine or understand). Character building really stood out here. It is a little slower than most, but that makes the relationship between the reader and the story that much more intense. Building a slow burn means that by the middle of the book, the reader really cares about these characters and wants to know the rest of their story.
