Tip & Lulu: A Tale of Two Friends is a delightful children’s picture book written and illustrated by Lauren Isabelle Pierre. When Lulu, a baby leopard, tries to make friends with the other baby animals on the savannah plains, she does not understand why they are all afraid of her and run away. As Lulu stares sadly at her reflection in the water, she is suddenly hit by rocks thrown by a group of meerkats, all of whom are now running to hide. On following the mischievous meerkats, Lulu discovers they are bullying the tiniest meerkat, named Tip. Lulu rescues Tip and the two become best of friends (marafiki milele). They then hear screams from the bullies and seek out the cause. Quick thinking – and some trust – will be needed in order to save tiny lives.

I finished reading Tip & Lulu: A Tale of Two Friends a good half hour ago and I still can’t stop smiling. Lauren Isabelle Pierre’s wonderful tale of unlikely friendships took me back to my youth when The Lion King was first released. Bullying is a terrible thing, even when it happens within the same family, and seeing a leopard cub come to a tiny meerkat’s rescue gave me such a warm feeling throughout. It shows that regardless of what species, family or tribe you are from, bullying others is absolutely NEVER okay. It takes somebody with true scruples to stand up for a stranger against their cowardly peers, but it also teaches the bullying victim that not all people are bad, nor out to hurt them. People and animals come in all shapes and sizes and we need to share this planet equally if we are to survive. If more people showed empathy towards others instead of talking with brute force and anger, the world would definitely be a much better place in which to live.

I thoroughly enjoyed Tip & Lulu: A Tale of Two Friends and wholeheartedly recommend this feel-good story to readers of all ages, but especially to those aged 5-12 so that children can see how all actions have consequences. It is up to each person and animal whether they use good actions which bring good things, or bad actions which ultimately hurt others as well as themselves. I look forward to reading Tip & Lulu’s book titles for many years to come and will be stocking my bookshelf with more from this author in the future.
